Police investigate shooting incident in the Underground

Toronto police are investigating an incident which occurred at approximately 12am (midnight) on Thursday, May 14 at the Underground restaurant in the Student Centre on York’s Keele campus.

At that time, it was reported to police that a male patron turned violent while being removed from the premises by paid staff at the Underground. The patron then produced and fired a gun, injuring the staff member. The male suspect then fled the scene on foot. The Toronto Police Service was called to the scene and immediately sealed off the area. The victim was located and was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

The Toronto Police Service describes the suspect as follows: male black, 19 years, wearing a green jacket and black jeans.

York University is alerting the community that Toronto police and York Security Services will have a heightened presence on campus as this incident is investigated. More information will be released as it becomes available as a result of the investigation.

York community members are reminded to exercise personal safety by:

  • being aware of your surroundings and the people around you;
  • reporting any suspicious persons or behaviour to York University Security Services;
  • limiting access to buildings to authorized personnel only.
