Open house to showcase York University area renewal and the subway extension

York community members are invited to an open house on Tuesday, April 7 to hear all about the updates to the York University and Downsview area secondary plans and the Spadina Subway extension to York’s Keele campus.

The open house will take place from 2 to 4pm in the Executive Learning Centre Private Dining Room on the ground floor of the Seymour Schulich Building on York’s Keele campus. The open house is hosted by the York University Development Corporation (YUDC). Officials from YUDC, Parc Downsview Park,  the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) and the City of Toronto Planning Department will be speaking at the open house. Following the presentations, there will be a Q-&-A session. Click here to view a PDF about the event.

The City of Toronto planner will talk about how the city and York University are updating York’s existing plan to increase density near the new Spadina Subway extension. Included in the presentation will be information on how York’s Keele campus will be transformed into a place where students can live, study, work and play.

TTC staff will be on hand to update community members on the much anticipated extension of the Spadina Subway line from Downsview Station to York’s Keele campus and beyond. By 2015, students, staff, faculty and people living in the community will be able to step out of the York University station right into the heart of the Keele campus. The subway will have six new stations and will reach into York Region. The subway will also connect to existing transit in the area.

The redevelopment of the former Canadian Forces Base Downsview into Parc Downsview Park has garnered much attention. A representative from the park will talk about how park officials and the City of Toronto are reviewing the area’s existing plan to get it ready for the more than 365 acres of park land, trails, walkways, new homes, community centres, employment and transit.

Community members interested in attending the open house should RSVP by e-mail to Barbara Cufaro, executive assistant, YUDC.
