Las Nubes Valentine’s Day sale on this week

York’s Faculty of Environmental Studies is holding a special Valentine’s Day sale this week of its Las Nubes Coffee. Featured items include bags of ground coffee and whole bean coffee, gift cards, bags and Las Nubes fair trade chocolate.

The sale is on today and tomorrow, from 10am to 5pm, in the lobby of the Health, Nursing & Environmental Studies Building located on York’s Keele campus.

As a special Welcome Back event, sale organizers are offering a free cup of Las Nubes fair trade coffee for all community members who bring their own cup to the sale. If you need a paper cup, the cost is 50 cents. Drop by the sale, have a cup of coffee and treat your sweetheart to something special for Valentine’s Day.

All proceeds from the sale will go to the Fisher Fund for Neotropical Conservation, which supports York’s sustainability research in the Las Nubes region. Las Nubes is York’s own sustainable specialty coffee. It is produced in the region adjacent to the Las Nubes Rainforest in southern Costa Rica by coffee farmers working in collaboration with the Faculty of Environmental Studies and the Tropical Science Center in San José, Costa Rica. The coffee is certified "sustainable" by Costa Rica’s Ministry of Agriculture, indicating that it meets specific standards of environmental production and processing. Furthermore, the purchase price from the farmers’ cooperative exceeds the "fair trade" price currently being paid on the international market and the co-op makes a significant investment in social services for its farmer members. Las Nubes Coffee meets the triple bottom line of sustainability – ecologically produced, economically profitable to growers and retailers, and socially responsible.
