Lions water polo players are named all-stars

Four members of the York Lions women’s water polo team and two from the men’s squad were named Ontario University Athletics all-stars on Saturday, Nov. 22, at the annual awards banquet.

On the women’s side, Julie Csikos and Kara Knowles were both named to the first team. Csikos is making her third appearance on the first team after finishing fourth in OUA scoring with 26 goals, the most among all Lions players. For Knowles, this is the first time she has been named a first-team all-star following two appearances on the second-team list. She tallied 15 goals this season, second best on the Lions.

Katherine Mercer and Morgen Smith were both named second-team all-stars for the first time. Mercer, playing in her first season in the OUA, had 13 goals for the Lions while Smith was the team’s goalkeeper and proved to be stellar in front of the net.

Fourth-year star Jordan Duffield received more votes than any other male player to grab his place on the first-team all-star list. He led all OUA players in scoring with 32 goals. Duffield has now been named an all-star in each of the four years he has played for York. He was named to the first team in 2005 and 2007 and to the second team in 2006.

Teammate Ryan Forde joins Duffield as an all-star as he was named to the second team after recording 19 goals on the season. The honour is Forde’s third as he was named to the first team last year and the second team in 2006.
