York is U hosts first Ultimate Sports Challenge and BBQ

York is U’s first ever Ultimate Sports Challenge and BBQ is a great way for students to test their ultimate potential as they battle it out in basketball, volleyball and soccer on the Vanier College field.

The Ultimate Sports Challenge is not just for the sports fanatic; it’s an event for everyone who likes to have fun. In addition to competing against other teams for the top spot, participants and spectators can enjoy a sizzling BBQ, priced to fit the student budget.

Registration for the Ultimate Sports Challenge starts at 10am on Thursday, Sept. 18, followed by the competition. Participants are required to enter with a team of four students and pay a registration fee of $8 per team.

The BBQ – free for participating teams – will be open at noon, followed by the semi-finals and finals with the closing awards ceremony at 6pm. There the winners of the Ultimate Sports Challenge will be announced with the first, second and third place teams receiving gold, silver and bronze medallions.

“Students will get to play sports all day – not just one, but three – claim the ‘Ultimate’ title and enjoy a delicious BBQ. I don’t know what’s better than that. And the best thing is, you don’t have to be a top-notch athlete to play – anyone can enter,” says Nicole Azuaga-Gabriel, signature events director for york is U and a third-year criminology student at York.

The purpose of the event is to welcome new and returning students to York with a fun-filled day of sports and entertainment. Spectators are encouraged to come out and enjoy prizes and snacks along with the mouth-watering BBQ. To earn the gold medal for the Ultimate Sports Challenge, teams not only have to compete with each other, they must also show school and team spirit. Team members are encouraged to decorate themselves with their team colours and face paint to show pride in their school and their team.
