Lions’ impressive streak comes to an end in Sudbury

The York Lions women’s basketball team’s winning streak against Ontario University Athletics (OUA) East division opponents has ended at 39 games.

The defending provincial champion Lions lost 92-83 against the Laurentian Voyageurs during an evening game on Wednesday, Jan. 23, in Sudbury. The loss marks York’s first defeat by a conference foe since Feb. 19, 2005.

With the loss, York (13-3) falls into tie with the University of Toronto Varsity Blues for first place in the OUA East division. The Voyageurs (12-4) are just two points behind the leaders.

During the York Lions’ lengthy winning streak, they outscored opponents by almost 20 points a game. Brenan Rurak led the Lions with 23 points against Laurentian, while rookie guard Brittany Szockyj had 18.

The Lions return to action tonight, at 6pm, in a game against the Ryerson Rams at the Tait McKenzie Centre. The game will be shown on Rogers York Region (Cable 10 and 63) at 9:45pm on Friday evening. The Lions will then host the Varsity Blues in a huge game on Saturday, Jan. 26, at 6pm. Once again, the game will be shown on Rogers York Region at 9:45pm.
