Atkinson students win CAs’ tax clinic competition

Students in York’s Atkinson School of Administrative Studies proved they know how to help at tax time by winning a new Chartered Accountants of Ontario competition for business school tax clinic volunteers.

Each year, in February and March, the institute sponsors CA income tax clinics around the GTA to assist some of the most vulnerable members of society with the preparation of their tax returns. This year, the institute decided to recognize the business school that provided the most volunteers to their tax clinics and, with 23 members of the accounting club taking part, Atkinson was the winner.

Atkinson Associate Dean Joanne Magee, a chartered accountant and professor of income tax law, was happy to assist the students with training and supervision. “We had 23 volunteers through this Atkinson Accounting Club initiative,” Magee said. “It was a wonderful experiential education opportunity for our students: they used their skills to help others and they learned a lot in the process.”
