Faculty honoured for academic achievements

Members of the York University Board of Governors joined with President and Vice-Chancellor Lorna R. Marsden, Vice-President Academic Sheila Embleton and Stan Shapson, vice-president research & innovation, to honour the academic achievements of 24 York faculty during a recent reception.

The annual event, hosted by the board’s academic resource committee, celebrates recipients of distinguished awards including Canadian Research Chairs, international awards of academic excellence and honorary doctorates from other institutions.

Samuel Swartz, Chair of the committee, warmly welcomed honourees and presented each with a memento of recognition. “York is home to many of Canada’s leading scholars and researchers and their achievements deserve to be recognized and celebrated,” said Swartz.

Those recognized at the reception were:

  • Sherry Simon – Canada Research Chair in Translation and Cultural History
  • Caitlin Fisher – Canada Research Chair in Digital Cultural
  • Peer Zumbansen – Canada Research Chair in Transnational and Comparative Law of Corporate Governance
  • Wendy Taylor – Canada Research Chair in Experimental Practical Physics
  • Stephen Gil – Canada-US Fulbright Award
  • Obiora Okafor – Canada-US Fulbright Award
  • Thomas Keil – Wesley J. Howe Award, Stevens Institute of Technology,
  • Andrew White – Steacie Fellowship, National Science & Engineering Research Council
  • J. Douglas Crawford – Steacie Fellowship, National Science & Engineering Research Council
  • Gary Watson – David Mundell Medal and Samuel Gates (US) Litigation Awards
