Men’s volleyball extends winning streak to 13 games

The York University Lions men’s volleyball team is the only undefeated squad left in the nation after extending its winning streak to 13 regular season games this past weekend.

The Lions, ranked number 10 by Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS), defeated arch-rival and CIS eighth-ranked Ryerson last Wednesday in a tightly-contested 3-1 win. On Saturday, York moved past Laurier in a straight-sets 3-0 victory.

The volleyball squad, which leads Ontario University Athletics (OUA) with 26 points, was paced by this week’s Male Athlete of the Week, Sholan Trivedi. The first-year chemistry major had 21 attacks, 12 kills and six digs for 14 points against Ryerson. On Saturday, he added 15 attacks and 10 kills for 11 points.

The Lions will look for their 14th straight win on Saturday when the team travels to Kingston to battle the Queen’s University Golden Gaels. York will also play the Royal Military College (RMC) on Sunday.

The women’s volleyball team had its own winning streak snapped at 12 games, losing 3-0 to Ottawa University on Saturday.

In other Lions sports action, the men’s basketball team improved to 12-4 on the year with wins over division-rivals RMC and Queen’s. The women’s basketball team split a pair of games, beating RMC before losing to Queen’s.

In men’s hockey action, the Lions defeated Brock 4-1. The team hosts Guelph Gryphons at 7:30pm on Thursday at the Ice Gardens.
