York University nursing Professor Laura Nicholson was joined by two recently graduated registered nurses, Steven Garalde and Alistair DeSouza, for a presentation at the SIM-one’s 2017 Healthcare Simulation Exhibition.

Held Nov. 30 in Toronto at the International Centre, the event brought together international educators and hospitalits interested in simulation healthcare.

During the event, Garalde and DeSouza presented a poster on “Students Lead Practice Workshops Using Simulation Principles” during the poster crawl. The interest in their initiative generated much discussion by conference attendees.

The initiative that the two York alumni planned and implemented was a mentorship club for nursing students that involves regular student-led nursing care reviews in York’s Nursing Simulation Centre.

The mentorship club, part of the Nursing Students Association of York (NSAY), was well attended and gave students the opportunity to share their initiative and how it was enacted.

Garalde and DeSouza’s initiative and legacy will continue under the guidance of two new nursing student leaders, said Nicholson.
