Hire a Student: Call for Fall/Winter 2017-2018 Work/Study position submissions

Student Financial Services announces the call for position requests for the Fall/Winter 2017–2018 Work/Study program.

The Work/Study program provides funding support to York University departments/units to assist them in providing part time employment opportunities for eligible undergraduate students.

There are four unique program types under the Work/Study umbrella:

  • Research at York (RAY): Enhances the research culture of the University and the undergraduate student academic experience. Students can gain valuable research experience from faculty or senior/graduate students while receiving compensation at a competitive rate.
  • York Engaged Students (YES): Program supports high-profile contributions and engagement activities on campus that are focused on such things as peer mentoring, ambassadorship and advising.
  • College Life at York (YES): Program focuses on enhancing the student experience within the college system.
  • The Work/Study program: Offers a broad range of opportunities that allow students to acquire the administrative/technical skills and knowledge needed to prepare them for the working world.

Hiring departments/units are expected to ensure that Work/Study submissions are not in conflict with any existing collective agreements. Detailed information for staff and faculty members about all programs, including how to post a request, program timelines, reimbursement rates, student eligibility requirements, how to hire and pay a students and all policy manuals can be found on the Employment Administrators site.

Student Financial Services is responsible for the administration of the Work/Study program which includes approving positions for funding, providing administrative support to hiring units, transferring funds to eligible hiring units, and assessing student eligibility for the program (through the Student Financial Profile).  Work/Study positions are available at both the Keele and Glendon campuses and allow York undergraduate students to earn extra money, gain valuable work experience and contribute to University life.

Departments and units interested in securing a Work/Study position(s) must submit the job requests on the Career Centre online job posting system no later than Friday, July 14.

A separate job posting must be submitted for each position requested.  Late submissions will not be considered.

Take note: Research at York (RAY) position submissions must involve undergraduate students in research activities that will provide them with hands-on research experience and at the same time provide the faculty member with meaningful research support.  Submissions for this program are reviewed by RAY Advisory Committee which is comprised of faculty members from various disciplines and representatives from Student Financial Services and the Associate Vice-President, Teaching and Learning.

The job description(s) should not exceed 400 words and must include the following:

  • Nature of the research project
  • Specific research activities the student(s) be engaged in
  • Type of research experience the student(s) will receive
  • Type of training and support that will be provided to the student(s) in carrying out these research activities
  • The name of the supervising full-time faculty member

Departments/units will be notified of the review results for all submissions/programs through the online job posting system no later than Friday, August 4.
