York’s School of Kinesiology and Health Science earns top rankings

A new ranking released by ShanghaiRanking’s Global Ranking of Sport Science Schools and Departments 2016 has placed York University’s School of Kinesiology and Health Science in the Faculty of Health third in Canada, and among the top 25 worldwide.

ShanghaiRanking’s global ranking, released in December 2016, is the first attempt to rank a group of institutions and units with the same subject focus on an international scale.

York earned the 21st spot out of 300 programs worldwide, and earned the third-place ranking of the 25 Canadian programs that were considered. Another 28 programs in Canada were not included in the study.

On a worldwide scale, UBC placed 16th and McMaster was 18th, and both these programs have sport medicine clinics associated with them.

“This stellar ranking reflects the very high standing of the School of Kinesiology and Health Science as an international leader in teaching and research,” says Robert Haché, vice-president Research & Innovation. “It is a tremendous accomplishment.”

ShanghaiRanking’s Global Ranking of Sport Science Schools and Departments maintains the use of transparent methodology and third-party data, but adopts an innovative methodology to rank universities from a unit level.

This is the first ranking of its kind, and a great amount of work is devoted to identify academic units, such as university, schools, faculties, and departments, which engage significantly in sport science research. A total of 110,000 unit addresses were examined and hundreds of websites searched to form the final list of 361 universities, or about 400 sport-related units that actively engage in research.

The top 300 universities are published in this ranking based on the measurement of publication, citation, citations per publication, top 25 per cent journals publications, and internationally collaborated publications. The bibliometric data is collected from Web of Science database with a time window of five years.
