I am pleased to inform you that longtime York University educator, disability advocate and lawyer Marian MacGregor has been appointed the Interim Executive Director of the Centre for Human Rights.

Marian MacGregor

Before joining Osgoode in 2008, Marian worked for 11 years in community legal clinics where she supported individuals with low income in diverse areas of law including housing, social assistance, employment and human rights. She also worked as a human rights lawyer for the Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative in India, advocating for the rights of prisoners and prison staff through the Police, Prisons and Human Rights program.

Marian received her BA from the University of Toronto, her LLB from the University of Windsor and her MA in Critical Disability Studies from York University. She is currently pursuing a PhD in Critical Disability Studies at York University. Her research focuses on how the Supreme Court of Canada has discussed and framed disability, and the intersection between the characterization of disability and the disability rights movement and governmental disability policy.

I would like to express my appreciation to Noël Badiou for his exemplary service as the Executive Director of the Centre for Human Rights at York since 2008. His work as a leader and advisor has contributed significantly to the building of a respectful, equitable, diverse and inclusive culture and community at York. We wish him the very best in his new role at Laurentian University.

I am delighted to welcome Marian to her new position as the Interim Executive Director of the Centre for Human Rights at York University and look forward to working with her as she undertakes this key leadership role within the University community. I hope you will join me in congratulating and welcoming her.
