This is What a Feminist Slut Looks Like book coverDemeter Press has a new website and an upcoming book launch.

Named in honour of the Goddess Demeter, herstory’s most celebrated empowered and outraged mother, Demeter is an independent feminist press. It publishes peer-reviewed scholarly work, fiction, poetry, and creative non-fiction on mothering, reproduction, sexuality and family.

Its latest publication, This is What a Feminist Slut Looks Like: Perspectives on the Slutwalk Movement, is co-edited by Demeter publisher and York Professor Andrea O’Reilly. The book will launch April 13, from 6:30 to 9:30, at the Supermarket Restaurant and Bar, 268 Augusta Ave. Toronto. There will be a cash bar, light snacks and free admission. RSVP to angiedeveau@gmail.com by April 6.

In April 2011, a team of five people put together Slutwalk Toronto, a protest responding to slut shaming and victim blaming culture. This collection engenders a critical engagement with the global phenomenon of the Slutwalk movement, considering both its strengths and limitations. The chapters take up Slutwalk through a feminist lens (broadly defined) considering Slutwalk as a successful social movement, a site of tremendous controversy, and an ongoing discussion among and between waves of feminists across the life cycle and across the globe.

“This month marks the 4th year anniversary of the original SlutWalk Toronto march that gave rise to an international feminist movement,” says O’Reilly. “With the SlutWalk movement originating from York University this book and its launch should be of great interest to the York community as well as Toronto residents more generally.”

The book is also co-edited by three York University alumni, May Friedman, who now teaches at Ryerson University in the School of Social Work and the Graduate Program in Communication and Culture; social worker Erika Jane Scholz; and Alyssa Teekah, who has organized in community and academic research spaces, working with queer Asian-Canadian filmmaker Richard Fung and the Centre for Women and Trans People at York University. Scholz and Teekah are the founders of the original Toronto SlutWalk.
