York University extends Warren Craney's term as head coach of the football program

York University Sport & Recreation announced on Tuesday that it has extended the employment of head football coach Warren Craney.

The decision came after the department’s annual year-end review of the program.

“We knew when we hired Warren that we were getting one of the best football coaches in the country, and he has proven us right,” said Jennifer Myers, director of Sport & Recreation. “He has been at the forefront of identifying, recruiting and developing elite student-athletes and we couldn’t be more excited about the current direction of the program.”

Craney has been at the helm of the Lions since 2010 and has overseen an overhaul of the program both on and off the field. On the football side, he has brought in three consecutive strong recruiting classes, seen a significant improvement in the team’s performance on both sides of the ball and assembled one of the strongest coaching staffs in the conference.

Away from the field, he has put an emphasis on academics with the implementation of multiple support strategies, and worked tirelessly to build relationships with many football alumni.

“I came to York to build this program into a winner and I am still 100 per cent committed to making that happen,” said Craney. “I am excited about the plan we have in place and there is so much more I want to accomplish here. I am looking forward to working toward achieving our goals over the coming years.”

Craney has also helped elevate the profile of the York football program with his coaching appointments away from the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) league, including as head coach of the Canadian junior national team for the 2014 world championships and four years on the Team World coaching staff for the International Bowl in Austin, Texas.

In addition to ongoing recruiting, the next big events on the football calendar are the team’s annual awards banquet in February and the spring camp in April.
