Are you a visual artist? The York University Student Centre is hosting an art competition open to all York students worth $20,000 in awards and art materials.
The 20 completed works of art will hang in the Student Centre’s food court mezzanine, meeting room and in the east and west student lounges on the Keele campus.
The deadline to submit mural proposals, not the actual piece, is now Tuesday, Feb. 26. There are 11 awards of $500 up for grabs based on a nine-member jury’s choice for special merit. In addition, the Student Centre will cover the cost of art materials up to $1,000 with $300 in advance.
Suggested themes for the Site Specific Mural Art Commissions include, student life, diversity, activism, social rights and reclaiming the Commons. The jury will be comprised of visual arts faculty members, visual arts undergrad and grad students and representative of the Student Centre.
Paintings, photo ink-jet prints on canvas, digital prints and mixed media are all welcome. The work will be displayed for two years.
The judging will take place Thursday, Feb. 28 and the winners will be announced on Tuesday, March 12. The winners will have until Tuesday, May 28 to complete the pieces with July slated as the month the pieces will be installed in the Student Centre.
